Theodosioupolis

   City in Armenia (q.v.) named after Theodosios II (q.v.); modern Ezerum, in Turkey. The magister militum for Armenia resided there after Byzantium and Persia (qq.v.) partitioned Armenia in the late fourth century. A synod in Theodosioupolis in 633 won the Armenian church over to Monoenergism (q.v.). The Arabs (q.v.) conquered it in 653; not until 949 was it again firmly under Byzantine control. In the 11th century Basil II (q.v.) made it capital of the theme of Iberia (qq.v.). The Seljuks (q.v.) conquered it in 1201.
